Chapter 24. herbs for Wen Disease (seasonal disease)

1. Qingjie Tang

This formula is used for the early stage of Wen disease. The person feels headache, sour and pain in whole body joints, hot/fever in muscles, mild chilly on back without sweat. The pulse is floating and slippery.

Bohe leaves (peppermint) 12 gram, Chantui 9 gram (remove feet and soil), Shigao (gypsum) 18 gram (grind), Gancao (licorice root) 4.5  gram.

It is said in the book Shang Han Lun: “When the disease is in the Taiyang stage, the person feels hot and thirsty, no chilly, the disease belongs to the Wen disease. After a sweat therapy, he felt burning hot, his Wen disease is further more to the Wind Wen disease. For the Wind Wen disease, the person has sweat, heavy body; likes to lie down for sleep, and has snooze during the sleep, and has difficulty in speak. His pulse is floating from the Chun to the Chi position.” This is the principle in the diagnosis of Wen disease by Master Zhang Zhongjing. The parameter for the diagnosis is very in detail, but he did not indicate clearly in separate chapters for the way for the treatment. If we check and study the Shang Han Lun carefully in detail, we can find that there are formulas in the Shang Han Lun for the treatment of the Wen disease, and he has already said that it is used for the treatment of the Wen disease. It is only because the readers did not pay much attention to them.

For example, in the chapter 61, he said: “After sweat due to the use of sweating therapy, the Guizhi Tang should not be used again. If the person has sweat then asthma, has no strong hot, use Mahuang, Xingren, Gancao and Shigao for the treatment.” For this condition, if the symptoms are not solved after sweat therapy, it must be to use the spicy and hot herbs to create sweat in a non-cold condition. It belongs to the “after sweat therapy” in the diagnosis principle for the Wen disease. (in the principle, the so called “if after the sweat”, means to use the spicy-hot herbs to create sweat in a Wen disease). That the sweat and asthma without strong hot in the Wen disease diagnosis means the same as “after sweat therapy, , the person has sweat, heavy body; likes to lie down for sleep, and has snooze during the sleep, and has difficulty in speak. When wake up, he will have asthma”  For this condition, the spicy-hot herbs has been mis-used, the Master worries that doctors may mis-regard the later sweat as the Guizhi Tang condition, so emphasized: don’t use the Guizhi Tang again, but use Maxingshigan Tang. This paragraph corresponds with the principle of the Wen disease chapter. Read the paragraphs together would be clear for their inner relationship. The herbal formula of Maxingshigan Tang is realy the formula for the early stage of the Wen disease. In my formula here, the meaning of the removal of Mahuang, but use Bohe and Chantui, has been discussed in the Gegen Huanglian Huangqin Tang (see later). No detailed discussion here.

In current time, there are many books discussing the Wen disease. The truth and the misleadings are all mixed together and some books seem more famous than others. Following the book
Nei Jingand Shang Han Lun, together with my own understanding and experience, I believe that, there are three major meaning for the Wen disease. Here we discuss it in detail for proper diagnosis and proper treatment.

One of the Wen diseases is the Spring Wen disease. It is due to the mild Wind-Cold attack in winter. The out-coming Xie Qi did not cause disease at that time, but hidden in between the muscle fribro membranes, to block the blood vessels, so to cause inside silent Hot. Upon the spring time, the Yang Qi starts to come up, the inside hidden Hot, originally having pushing nature, now trigerred by and mixed with the mild Wind-Cold Xie Qi attack in the spring, erupts suddenly, so as to make the body Hot/fever in the inside and outside of the body. This is what has been said in the book
Nei Jingthat “if the body is attacked by Cold in the winter, the person will have Wen disease in next spring”. Such case should be treated by Liangjie Tang. If the Hot is very severe, use Hanjie Tang. If there is sweat, use the Master’s formula Gegen Huanglian Huangqin Tang, or use my Hejie Tang with addition of Shigao.

If the Wen disease occurs in the summer, it is called Summer Wen. In this case, the Hot/fever is more severe. The pulse is waving and long in the early stage of the disease. If the person craves for cold water to drink, use large amount of Baihu Tang, or use my Xianlu Tang.

Another kind of the Wen diseases is the Wind Wen disease. The clinic condition is similar to the Wind-Cold Shanghan disease. At the time of the disease, the season has changed to warm weather, and the invading Xie Qi has changed to warm, so it is not called Cold-invasion, nor Wind-invasion Shanghan disease, but the Wind Wen disease. It is the same as the disease caused by Wind and Hot, as indicated in the
Shang Han Lun. It can happen in the later spring, or between the summer and the autumn. For the treatment, pay attention to the cold or hot of the season/weather at the time, as well as the pulse, to treat the condition accordingly. If it happens in the early spring or later autumn, the season is between the cold and hot, the person has no chilly in the beginning; the pulse is only floating; the person has no hot symptoms, use my Qingjie Tang, with addition of herb Muhuang 3 to 6 gram, or use the Master’s Da Qinglong Tang. If it happens in the very hot summer time, the pulse is floating and waving, use my Jiangjie Tang, or Hanjie Tang. If the person has sweat, use my Hejie Tang, with addition of Shigao.

Additional form of the Wen disease is the Wetness Wen disease. It occurs in hot and humidity weather. It is continuous raining weather. The Wetness/humidity Qi is inhaled through the breath, goes to the Upper Jiao of the body, blocks the Big Qi in the chest, so as to prevent the connection between the Ying-Qi and the Wei-Qi of the body, and cause the body surface feeling as being sealed or being tied. The tongue covering is white and slippery and oily, with slight grey in color. In such case, the muscle-releasing, and urine-promoting herbs should be used, to expel the Wetness Qi out of the body through the sweat and urine, such as my Xuanjie Tang. The Master’s Zhuling Tang, with removal of Ajiao, the addition of Lianqiao, can also be used. If the Wetness-Hot condition lasts for a long time, the person has the Yangming sthenic condition, use Baihu Tang. The addition of Cangzhu in it would make it work better. However, when I use this Baihu Tang, I use the Huashi to replace the Zhimu, and/or use the Yiyiren to replace the Genmi.

For the “if the person do not keep and save his valuable sex liquid, he would have the Wen disease in spring”, though indicated clearly in the book
Nei Jing, the symptoms of such Wen disease are included in the Wind Wen disease and the Spring Wen disease. The weak person is easy to get the common cold (Wind-Cold invasion condition). The person with the Yin deficiency is easy to get the Wen disease. For this reason, no matter it is the Wind Wen disease or the Spring Wen disease, if the person is with the Yin deficiency, among the surface-expelling herbs, Fire-clearing herbs, and the Falling herbs, use Yin-nourishing herbs too, such as Shangyao, Shengdi, Xushen, Ajiao and Jizihuang (egg yolk), etc. or use Qi-nourishing herbs, such as addition of Renshen in the Baihu Tang, or the Renshen in the Zhuye ShiGao Tang. When the Renshen is used with the cooling herbs, it works not only to nourish the Qi, but also the Yin portion of the body.

The discussion about the Wen disease above, is only a outline for its diagnosis and treatment. When meet a patient, the treatment should still be modified according to the person’s specific condition, as will be discussed in later of this chapter. For the Yi disease, it is caused by Xie Qi in the nature. It is infectious disease, different from the Wen disease.

In the formula, the Bohe leaves (peppermint) should be the fresh, young leaves. Its stem, should be used in Qi-harmonizing formula. If use it for sweat therapy, its ability reduces half. If its color is gray, not green, the healing power is even less. If use the fresh and green leaves, 9 gram is sufficient. Bohe is similar to the Bingpian (borneol) in its odor. It is good as penetrating. Its power can reach the organ and tendons inside, and skin and hair outside layer of the body, so it is good to solve the pain in the tendons and bones in the Wen disease. If you think that its odor is light and floating, it can only create sweat in the skin, you look down its ability.

That to remove the feet of Chantui (cicada slough) means to remove its front big feet. The front feet are hard as steal, with breaking ability. If use it for the treatment of eye cateract or sovle ulcer, the Chantui with the front feet is better. If use it for sweat, it is better to remove it, since it is not good to have breaking function in the surface-expelling herbs. Chantui is mild cooling and weak in taste. It originally is not a sweat herb. Use it here for sweat, is due to its “treat the shell layer disease by the shell”. It is a smart herb in the sweat formula. It is especially good to be used in person who is weak in body condition and could not endure a strong sweating therapy. When it is used in the Wen disease with hidden skin rash, it is especially good to bring the skin rash out for healing.

The Shigao is mild cold in herbal nature. It has been clearly indicated in the
Shennong Bencao Jing. Though it is a stone material, it is actually functioning calm. For its heavy in weight, 18 gram is only a small hand amount. Its cooling power is about equal to 9 gram of Zhimu. However, its Fire-clearing ability is doubled, for it can cool and disperse. If we look at the formulas from later doctors, upon the Yangming stage with the sthenic condition, they started to use the Shigao 15 to 18 gram. How can we believe that they know the ability of the Shigao! The Shigao, however, should be used in original, non-processed form. With the processed Shigao, 30 gram of it might cause danger to the life. In addition, this formula is used for the condition, in which the person has mild chilly feeling on the back. It is the accumulation and sealing of Fire inside, which cannot be distributed or dispersed to the outside, not a real chilly condition. In the Baihu Tang condition, this is a quite common phenomenon. In this case, the use of Shigao can disperse the accumulated, the fold Fire out, to solve the chilly feeling.

It might ask: in the common cold, when the Xie Qi attacks the Taiyang portion of the body, the person feels chilly. If the Xie Qi penetrates into the Yangming stage/portion, the person will have no chilly but Hot. In the spring and summer season, the weather is hot, so, the when the outside Xie Qi attacks, it will not vibrate with the Cold-Water meridian (Taiyang portion) on the back, but vibrate with the Dryness Metal (the Yangming portion of the body), and penetrate deep in the Yangming meridian on the front of the body, so to cause the Wen disease. This is the later time doctor to explain the Wen disease. But in the outline of the Wen disease in the Shan Han Lun, why it still calls the early stage of the Wen disease the Taiyang stage? Answer: in the early stage of the Wen disease, the Xie Qi is also in the Taiyang stage, only that it penetrate very soon into the Yangming.

A man, 20 years of old, in a summer night, for cold night, covered thin covering. He waked up due to cold, but due to lazy, he did not cover more. Soon he was waked up again. In the morning, he felt mild chilly. Upon the noon, he felt very hot inside and outside of the body. He felt asthma and short of breath. His pulse was waving, long the floating. He was given the Qingjie Tang, with the change of the Shigao to 45 gram, and with addition of Niubangzi (fry, grind) 9 gram. After drinking of the herbal tea, he got sweat and the condition was cured. From this case, it is known that the Xie Qi in the very beginning, is in the Taiyang stage, but not stick there. The reason that the person felt cold is that he had thin covering. The weather however is not cold, so the Xie Qi, when attacks the body, does not focus or stick to the Taiyang, but also in the Yangming. Also at that time, the body is usually with more warm inside, so that the Xie Qi moves into the inside Yangming sooner. However, what we are talking about here is for the Wind Wen disease. If the disease happens in the winter but shows up in the spring, or shows up in the summer, they usually has nothing to do with the Taiyang stage. So, in the book
Shang Han Lun, it is specially indicated: the Wind Wen is clearly different from the Spring Wen. In addition, the Xingren and Niubangzi both can reducing the Lung Qi to solve asthma, but the Xingren is warm and the Niubangzi is cold. For the asthma in the Shanghan disease, use the Xingren, but in the Wen disease, use the Niubangzi, since in the warm herbs are not used in the Wen disease.

Letter from Mr. Song, Sanshan city, Zhili province:

In the spring of year 1925, a man came to the Tianjing city to learn carpenter. Due to thin in the body condition and to the hot weather, he got Wen disease and came for help. His pulse was frequent and slippery. His tongue covering is white and thick. He fell sleep from time to time. I gave him the Qingjie Tang, in which the Shigao was 30 gram. For his frequent pulse, added was the Xuanshen 15 gram. One dose solved his disease.

A spring in a year, Mr. Yu had all of his three daughter had Wen disease with skin rashes. I went to him for visit. They all were given the Qingjie Tang, with addition of Lianquiao, Shengdi and Huashi, and all are cured. At that time, people suffered the same condition were very risk in life. Only with this formula I used, they got cured.

2. Liangjie Tang (Liang here means cooling down; Jie means to solve and to cure)

This formula is used in Wen disease. The person feels hot inside the body and on the body surface. The pulse is big and floating.

Bohe leaves (peppermint) 9 gram, Chuantui 6 gram (remove the feet and soil), Shigao 30 gram (grind), and Gancao 4.5 gram.

For the Spring-Wen disease, usually the person would have the hot inside and outside of the body very soon. It is even more like this in Summer Wen disease. This has been discussed before. For the Wind Wen disease, however, the person would have such condition within two to three days. The Liangjie Tang can solve all of such condition, after the sweat created by the formula.

For the western medicine, they commonly use Aspirin for the common cold. Take one tablet of Aspirin with sugar, the person gets cured after sweat. I tried it quite often too. Its ability to create sweat is very strong. If the common cold can be cured with the sweat therapy, use to create sweat and the disease can be cured. The Liangjie Tang and the previous Qingjie Tang, both can be replaced by the Aspirin, for its cooling nature, which can disperse the Hot in the body. However, it should not be used in the later Hanjie Tang, for the poor ability of the Aspirin to clear the Fire.

3. Hanjie Tang (Han here means cold, freeze; Jie means to solve, to clear.)

This formula is used for the condition, in which the person feels very hot and fever in the body. The person feels Hot and thirsty. His tongue is white and thick and tends to be yellow in color. The pulse is waving and slippery. He feels headache, and the whole body feels as tied to tightness.

Shigao 30 gram (grind), Zhimu 24 gram, Liangqiao 4.5 gram, Chantui 4.5 gram (remove feet and soil).

It might be asked: this formula is a expelling formula. It uses large amount of Shigao and Zhimu, but less Lianqiao and Chantui, how it can create sweat? Answer: to use this formula, it is very important that the condition and the pulse must follow the indication of the formula. It is indeed yes, the sweat can be created very soon, no worry that it will not work. When the pulse is waving and slippery, the person feels thirst, the Yangming sthenic Fire is true, which is originally the indication for the Baihu Tang. Only because the person still has slight headache and the body surface feels some tightness, as there is some amount of Xie Qi remaining in the Taiyang stage/portion. For this reason, in the formula here, use large amount of Shigao and Zhimu to clear the Stomach Fire, but use little amount of Lianqiao and Chantui, for their ability to reach the body surface, to bring the Fire in the stomach to the Taiyang layer to develop into sweat. This is actually a formula to harmony the Yin and Yang, to create sweat, not means to push the body to create sweat. In addition, the Shigao is cold in herbal nature, and its taste is mild spicy. The Shigao alone can create the sweat in the sthenic Fire condition.

A youth, due to long time labor work, got the Wen disease. He visited doctor for half month without improvement. When I saw him, his eye was white and could not see anything, had hands scattering to touch stuff; his body moves randomly; chattering randomly. He had diarrhea and slippery bowel movement. At this movement, he though had no slippery diarrhea, but still had diarrhea one to two times a day. His pulse was floating and frequent. It was more floating on the righ Chun position, but the pulse could be felt on both Chi position. Since his eyes could no see anything, it indicated that his Kidney Yin is to exhaust. Randomly touching and reaching things by hands suggests that the Liver Wind started. His condition has developed into very dangerous stage. It was still lucky that, the pulse was still floating, suggesting that the disease is still in the Taiyang stage. The strong floating pulse on the right Chun position indicated that the sweat was coming. The reason that he was to sweat but had no sweat is that, for the sweat in the body is as the raining in the nature between the sky and the ground. In the nature, when the Yin and the Yang is in harmony, there will be the rain. In the body, when the body Yin and body Yang is in harmony, there will be the sweat. In his condition, the pulse in the Chi Position was very weak, so the Yang had raised but there was no response from the Yin, so how can a sweat be developed? What is needed is to use herbs to heavily supply more Yin. To nourish the Yin is so to let the Yin to respond to the raised Yang, and so to create sweat. For this consideration, in the herbal formula gave to him, it contained Shoudi, Xuanshen, Ajiao, and Goujizi, all of which weighted 180 to 210 grams. It was cooked as a big bowl. He was asked to drink the tea gradually and slowly. He drank two such doses for the same day. The next day, he got heavy sweat and the condition was solved. You see, there is actually no fixed principle for how to create sweat. It is needed to pay attention to see if there is the deficiency in the Yin and/or the Yang portion of the body; if yes, supply the Yin and/or the Yang. Or, check the mechanism contributing to the sweat, see which step(s) needs correction and to correct it. All the ways could create sweat healing. No need to only depend on the sweat-creating herbs to create the sweat.

Comments: For the Shanhan disease and the Wen disease, it is basically inhibited to use the sticky, oily herbs to nourish the Yin, or the sweet-cooling herbs to clear the Fire, since they may keep the Xie Qi in the body. Now, they are used to help to create sweat, so as to expel the Xie Qi out. The function of the herbs really depends on how you use them.

A man, 40 years of old, due to the Wind-Cold attack and to seal the body surface, felt no sweat, agitated hot in the chest with asthma and short of breath. Doctors gave him Souzi Jiangqi Tang, with additional Wind-dispersing and Fire-clearing herbs. After several doses, the condition was worse. His pulse was waving, slippery and floating. He was given the Hanjie Tang. Very soon he felt sweat on the upper body. Very soon again, he felt the healing power moved down to the Lower Jiao and the leg, to have sweat there too. The disease was cured right away.

A man, 30 years of old, had the Wen disease. He visited doctors, but none of them could help him. When I saw him, his pulse was waving and strong, with little floating feeling. Asked if he had headache, he said yes. Wish to drink cold water? Answered yes, sometimes drank cold water, but not too thirsty. It was considered that, though the disease had last for a long time, the Yangming Hot had not become sthenic yet. The Taiyang surface Xie Q had not either been disappeared yet. He was given the Hanjie Tang. Very soon he got sweat and the condition was cured.

A man, 30 years of old, got the Wind-Cold common cold in winter. He felt chilly and no sweat. He felt agitated and annoyed in the chest. It was originally the condition for Da Qinglong Tang, but the doctor used Mahuang Tang. After drink of the herbal tea, the person felt much more agitated and annoyed to mad. His pulse was very big waving and slippery. The pulses on the two Chun positions are floating, especially on the right side. He was given the Hanjie Tang. Very soon, he got heavy sweat and the condition was solved. Clearly, the Hanjie Tang is not only suit for the Wen disease, it is also suit for the Shanghan disease with such pulses.

A old man, 70 years of old, usually had exhausting condition. With little attack of Wind-Cold, he would have asthma. His condition was solved by giving the herbal formula of  Xiao Qinglong Tang, with removal of Mahuang, but addition of Xingren and Shigao. One year, after Lantern festival, due to a heavy Wind-Cold attack again, his old disease recurred. Within five to six days, his condition turned into the Yangming stage. His pulse was string, long, floating and frequent and strong when feel on it, but no waving or slippery feeling (this is the pulse indicating the common cold with the inside damage too). He was given the Hanjie Tang, with addition of Dangshen 9 gram. One dose created sweat for him and the asthma stopped. His pulse then still showed the sign for Hot. He was then given the Baihu Jia Renshen Tang, with the Shangyao to replace the Genmi. The herbal tea was drunk three separated time. After finish the drinking, the condition was solved.

A pregnant woman had Shanghan disease for two to three days. Her pulse was very waving and slippery. Her spirit was smearing and cloudy, with random chattering from time to time. Her tongue covering was thick and white in color. She was given the Hanjie Tang. There was another doctor on spot. He asked the meaning of the herbal formula. I said: to create sweat. He asked: would this formula create sweat to solve the condition? I said: if this formula is used to such condition, it will create sweat to cure. If use it as regular sweat-creating formula, it may not work. After the lady drank the herbal tea, very soon she got sweat and the condition was cured.

A lady, 20 years of old, had Wen disease. She felt pain in the throat, and her tongue moved not smoothly, almost hard to talk. She felt hot in heart and thirsty, so she drank water again and again. Her pulse was very deep and thin. The body muscle didn’t feel hot. So, the pulse was neglected, but followed the body conditions and gave her the Hanjie Tang. After drink of the herbal tea, she got slight sweat, the condition was slightly improved. The next morning, the condition recurred the same as before, and the tongue was much harder to move. It was known that, the herbal formula was correct, but the power of the healing was not strong enough. So, it was still used the Hanjie Tang, with the amount of Shigao doubled. The herbal tea was drunk in two times. She got slight sweat again. The condition was cured.

Comments: if the Shanhan disease is with deep and thin pulse, the condition is usually a Yin condition. If the Wen disease is with the deep and thin condition, it is usually a Yang condition. The Wen disease is usually got in the winter and shows up in spring. Its development is from the inside to the outside. Some times, the disease is fold in inside and not develop to the outside, the pulse will be as deep and thin. If this condition is mis-diagnosed as a cold condition, it will cause wrong healing result. For the case here, the initial use of the Hanjie Tang is correct and condition was to cure. In the next morning, the tongue was harder, so the Shigao was doubled amount, the herbal tea was drunk by separated twice, and the condition was cured. This means: in the treatment of Shanghan disease or a Wen disease, the herbal tea should be drunk several times, mimic the ancient way of one-dose for three times; not all in once.

My student, Mr. Gao treated a woman, who was 70 years of old. She had the Shanghan disease in an early spring. Within three to four days, she felt very annoying hot. She had also white diarrhea. The bowel movement was many times and her pulse was waving, slippery and floating. Mr. Gao gave her the Hanjie Tang, with additional of Baishao 9 gram. One dose solved the Hot, and the diarrhea was also cured.

Dr. Wu Youke said: “for the inside condition after bowel-cleansing therapy, the pulse was mild frequent and the body was milk hot, the mind might be somewhat cloudy. This is a condition, in which the Xie Hot floats in the muscle and body surface, there is no stagnation inside the body. Though no sweat, the herbal formula of Baihu Tang should be used, so that the Xie can be released through the sweat. If, after the bowel-cleaning therapy, the pulse was hollow, weak and frequent, and it is difficult to feel when pressed harder, the herbal formula of Baihu Jia Renshen Tang should be used. The condition would be solved very soon with the sweat created.”

Comments: The formula of Baihu Tang or the Baihu Jia Renshen Tang is not a surface-expelling formula. But, if used in a correct way, even if it is used after a bowel-cleansing therapy, it can create a sweat within short time, not to speak of its use before the bowel-cleansing therapy. Not only for this formula, even the Chengqi Tang, can also work as a sweating therapy formula, depending on how it is used.

Again, Mr. Hong Jiren said: “I treated a perso with the Wen disease for eight to nine days. I used Chaige Tang to expel; the Huangqin and Huanglian to clear the fire; the Mangxiao and Dahuang to clear the Xie from the stool, none had worked. The person lost his consciousness already. He had random touch and massage stuff. The condition was very dangerous. I then used large dose of Dihuang Tang (it must have removed the Gizhi and Fuzi from it), with addition of Renshen and Maidong. No far away, the person had sweat all of the body, and the dangerous condition was calm down and returned the consciousness.

Comments: This case is similar to my use of Yin-nourishing formula to create sweat. The difference is that it added Renshen to nourish the Qi portion of the body. The discussions above all are for the mechanism to create sweat. If the readers can understand it, there should have no more worry any longer.

Letter from Mr. Li, Yanshan city, Zhili province:

Letter from Mr. Li, Tianjing city, had the Wen disease. He tried the herbs from other doctors but no improvement. I felt his pulse. It was strong when pressed slight or harder. He felt hot on the body surface and inside. He was given Hanjie Tang and got sweat whole of the body and the condition was cured. So, I realized that, in the formula, to use large amount of Shigao, Zhimu to clear the Fire, but use little amount of Lianqiao and Chantui to bring the Hot to the body surface, works marvelous than formula as Yinqiao San and Sangju Yin, and so on. From this case, it is also known that the non-processed Shigao is really a good herb ingredient. After success in this case, later, whenever I met the Shanhan or Wen disease in a sthenic condition, I never not followed this formula to use large amount of Shigao. Also, if the condition is sthenic in the Hot, but asthenic in the pulse, I always used the Baihu Jia Renshen Tang, or use the Baihu Jia Renshen Tang, with the Shanyao to replace the Genmi Tang. It always works well.

Letter from Mr. Song, Yanshan city, Zhili province:

In a winter of a year, the daughter of Mrs. Guo had Shanghan disease. She had very hot condition within three to four days of the disease. She had red face and strong breath. Her all pulses were waving and frequent, with random chattering from time to time. She was given the Hanjie Tang. For her feeling of fullness in the chest, herb Gualuren 30 gram was added. One dose solved her problem.

4. Shigao Aspirin Tang

This formula is used to treat the same condition as above Hanjie Tang.

Shigao 60 gram (grind), Aspirin one tablet.

First, drink the Aspirin with white sugar water for swallow. Cook the Shigao to collect one big bowl of herbal tea. When the body has sweat, drink the Shigao tea two third, to help the function of the Aspirin for sweat. After the sweat stops for two to three hours, and when the person still feel little hot in the body, drink the remaining Shigao tea over. If the person still feels some hot, cook another dose of the Shigao as tea, or with addition of little Genmi in it. Drink the tea gradually and slowly until the hot disappears completely. No need to take more Aspirin.

In addition: this herbal formula can not only replace the Hanjie Tang, but also the Liangjie Tang. In the later case, reduce the Shigao to half amount.

Letter from Mr. Wang, Pingtai city, Jiangsu province:

My small son, in a time in the later summer and early autumn, had sudden big hot. He lost spirit, closed eyes and hard to feed him. My parents feared a lot. I, for knowing what it might be, said: “No worry”. I used the Shigao Aspirin Tang in your book, following the original requirement for the use. After drink the tea, my son restored his mind and the fever disappeared. On the noon the next day, he felt hot again. I so dared to use the same formula again. For his cough and heavy phlegm, I added herb Banxia and Niubangzi to the formula. After drink of the second formula, all conditions were solved.

5. Hejie Tang

This formula is used for the hotness and fever in both body surface and inside organs. He person has sweat from time to time. The tongue covering is white, and the pulse is floating and slippery.

Lianqiao 15 gram, Chantui 6 gram (remove feet and soil), Shigao 18 gram (grind), Baishao 15 gram, and Gancao 3 gram.

If the pulse is floating and slippery, with waving feeling, the Shigao should be added to 30 gram.

6. Xuanjie Tang (Xuan here means to disperse, to expel in Chinese; Jie means to solve.)

This formula is used for the stick of Xie Qi in the Taiyang stage/portion, so that the Hot is accumulated in the urine bladder. The urine is red and rough. Or, due to the reduce in the urine, the stool is slippery and diarrhea. The formula also solve the early stage of Wetness Wen disease, in which the person felt chilly and strong hotness, with tongue covering as grey, slippery and oily.

Huashi 30 gram, Gancao 6 gram, Lianqiao 9 gram, Chantui 9 gram (remove feet and soil), Baishao 12 gram. If the person has slippery stool, double the amount of Gancao.

A man, 65 years of old, had Wind Wen disease. Within six to seven days, he had swelling all over the body. His kidney was big as a water melon. He tried several herbal therapy but failed. After tens of day, he came to me for medical help. His pulse was waving, slippery and slight floating. He felt hot in heart and thirsty. His urine was rough and hot. He had lots of phlegm, with slight asthma. His tongue covering was white and thick. He was given this formula, with addition of Shigao as 30 gram. After drinking of the herbal tea, he got mild sweat all over the body, with urine smooth and the swelling was reduced to half, but he still felt hot and thirsty. So the Shigao was doubled. He got mild sweat again, and swelling disappeared and the other symptoms all disappeared completely.

Comments: this is a Wind Wen disease. Its Hot has past from the Taiyang meridian to the urine bladder organ, to block the water tract, as well as the Yangming Stomach condition is to be sthenic. From this case, it can be seen that, to say that the Wen disease goes to the hand meridian, not to the feet meridian, is how wrong!

7. Ziyin Xuanjie Tang (here, Ziyi means to nourish the Yin portion of the body).

This formula is used for Wen disease. The Xie Qi in the Taiyang stage has not been solved, and it moves into the Yangming stage gradually. The person usually has Stomach Yin deficiency and the Yangming condition has not became sthenic yet. He feels dryness and thirsty, drinks a lot of water. Due to the large amount of water drinking, which can not be metabolized, so cause slippery diarrhea, which again makes the thirsty worse. The person may have cough, or sweat, or short of urination. Such condition is more among the Wen Zhen disease (Zhen here means skin rash condition). It belongs to a dangerous condition, which needs this formula.

This formula is the same as the previous Xuanjie Tang, but with addition of Shanyao 30 gram, and Gancao as 9 gram.

This is a condition, in which the Stomach and the urine bladder both have Hotness, as well as asthenic Fire. The herb Huashi is similar to the Shigao in herba nature. It can clear the Stomach Fire, to open the body openings, and to clear the urine bladder fire too. When used with the Gancao, it can create water, to clear the Yin deficient Fire. One herb has three function, so it is the king ingredient in the formula. The large amount of Shanyao is to nourish the True Yin, to seal the Yuan Qi, so used as a helper. In addition, when the Shanyao is used as non-processed form, its juice is sticky, together with the sweet-buffering nature from the Gancao, can hold the Huashi in the stomach, make the Huashi from the stomach to the spleen, from spleen to the lung, to distribute water all over the body.

When the water goes into the urine bladder through the three Jiao, the annoying Hot is solved, the urine is smooth, and the slippery stool stops. With the use of Lianqiao and Chantui, which are good at expelling Xie Qi to the body surface, can solve the remaining Xie Qi in the Taiyang stage, to make the accumulated Fire in the bladder not tied by the invading Xie Qi, so as to make the inside Hotness easier to disperse. In addition, for the Chan, the cicada, it only drinks but not eats. It has urine but no stool. So, its shell (the Chantui) can make the urine smooth and to stop stool. After I come into the health area, I have met numerous such cases. Doctors usually feel hard to solve such clinic challenge. When use this formula, no case was not solved. It is even more suit in the treatment of the Wen Zhen disease with such urine-stool condition. In this later case, the additional benefit for the Lianqiao and Chantui is that they are also good choice to expel the Xie Qi and to solve the skin rashes.

A woman, 70 years of old, had swelling all over the body. I have tried treatment for her for little bit more than one month. The swelling was over, but the body condition was not completely covered. In a spring, she suddenly had Wen disease. She felt annoying Hot. The family prepared fresh herb Digupi tea and let her to drink, the slippery diarrhea became endless, and annoying hot was worse. Her pulse was floating, slippery and frequent. It felt weak when pressed harder. The family thought that her condition would have no way to help, for her old age, long time of disease, annoying hot in the Upper Jiao and endless diarrhea. However I insisted it might be helped. She was given the Ziyin Xuanjie Tang. One dose stopped her diarrhea and the annoying Hot was also reduced. Later, the Baihu Jia Renshen Tang, with Shanyao to replace the Genmi was used. She was asked to drink the herbal tea gradually and slowly to prevent diarrhea. Upon finish the herbal tea, the condition was solved.

A young girl, not married, had Wind-Hot invasion common cold. She had silent skin rashes all over the body. She felt annoyed thirsty and slippery diarrhea, with asthma. Her pulse was floating, frequent but weak. I have considered for a long time for her condition and finally decided to use the Ziyin Xuanjie Tang. Two doses solved the problem.

Comments: when use the Ziyin Xuanjie Tang, the person can not have big sweat, and should have no big sweat either, for the Yin portion is not sufficient. Sometimes, the patient may cure without any sweat.

8. Ziyin Qingzao Tang.

This formula treats the same condition as previous Ziyin Xuanjie Tang. The surface Xie Qi has been solved, the person may have no diarrhea, my have asthma, or have cough and spit phlegm. The condition indeed belongs to the sthenic Fire, and the pulse is asthenic frequent.

For the Ziyin Xuanjie Tang condition, after use the Ziyin Xuanjie Tang, the person still has remaining Hotness, use this Ziyin Qingzao Tang formula.

This formula is the same as the Ziyin Xuanjie Tang in gradients, but with removal of Lianqiao and Chantui.

A woman had pregnant for five months. She occasionally had Shanghan disease. Within three to four months, she had abortion. She felt annoying thirsty in the Upper Jiao, had asthma and long moaning and groaning. The phlegm was a lot with frequent spit. She visited doctors for help, no improvement and had additional slippery diarrhea, ten times a day. The previous doctor refused to continue the treatment and said that the patient was in very dangerous condition. The family felt very scared and asked me to have a look. Her pulse seemed waving and slippery, but felt very weak upon harder press, especially on the two Chi positions. From beginning, I decided to use Ziyin Qingzao Tang, but considering that she had had abortion for only four to five days, I dared no to use Cold herbs. So, I used first of all the Shanyao 60 gram, sour Shiliu ( pomegranate) one, which was chop and grinded into mud. The two were cooked and one big bowl herbal tea was collected. The patient was asked to drink the tea with tree separate times. The slippery diarrhea stopped. Then her pulse became waving, slippery and sthenic. I thought that, this condition was asthenic, but indeed was with out-invading sthenic condition too. Without removal other invading Xie Qi, how could other condition be solved? At that time, it was 3 pm. The patient said that, once at this time of the day, she would feel hot, and very tired, but hard to fall into sleep day or night. So, the next day, the Ziyin Qingzao Tang was used, in which the Shanyao was used 45 gram. The herbal tea was drunk slowly and gradually, one mouth each time, for the reason that, she was in after abortion, the body was weak, and it was not desired to let the herbs go down the uterus. At that time, she had a good sleep, the thirsty and diarrhea stopped, and the asthma and cough reduced to half too. So, in the following formula, the Shanyao and Huashi were reduced half, with addition of Longgu 24 gram, and Muli 24 gram. One dose solved the condition remained.

One girl, not married, had Shanghan disease for twenty days about. She was very slim, with cloudy mind. She felt hot in the afternoon, had cough and asthma. Doctors refused to treat her. Her pulse was frequent to seven times per breath circle, and it was very weak so as hard to feel. I considered that, if her condition was due to long time disease suffering, it might be hard really to help her. However, this is a sudden disease, the life root should have not been damaged yet. So, She was given the Ziyin Qingzao tang anyway, with reduction of the Huashi half, and with addition of Xuanshen and Shoudi 30 gram, each and with wild Taishen 15 gram. She was asked to drink the herbal tea gradually and slowly. After finish the drink, the herbal residue was re-cooked to collected the second tea and to let her to drink it again the same way. Within two days, she drank three doses. The Huashi was reduced to 6 gram. Then her condition was really cured.

Comments: in this case, the Huashi was not removed completely, for the consideration that, at the end of the Shanghan disease, the Xie Qi might remain in some extent. Also for fearing that a nourishing herb might keep the Xie Qi in the body,  the Huashi was used to direct the herb healing effect down, to create an opening to the Xie Qi in the lower part of the body. Also, whenever the herbs are a lot, it must be cooked for more cups and drink it gradually. This is true in the life saving therapy, especially if the condition is with Yin deficiency.

The mother of Mr. Ji was 70 years of old. She was very slim and thin in the body condition. She had poor digestion function, hard to digest grain food, so she could only drink cow’s milk, or little rice soup from time to time. She had lied on the bed for two years and even hard to sit up. In an autumn, she had Wen disease. At that time, I was in the Fengtian city. The family came from Jingzhou city to me for help. When I saw her, her pulse was thin and frequent. It felt slight strong when pressed harder. She had hot and cough, spit stick phlegm, had cloudy mind, and very weak breath. She was given the Ziyin Qingzao Tang, with the use of only half amount of Huashi, and with addition of Xuanshen 15 gram. One dose reduced the disease to half level. The herbal residue was re-cooked again to have second herbal tea, which was drunk with addition of one egg yolk. After drink, the whole condition was solved.

A child, lived in Fengtian city, was 4 years of old. He had Wen disease with the Xie Qi still remained in the body surface. The doctor did not know to use light-expelling herbs, but used bitter-cold herbs. After drink of the herbal tea, the child got slippery diarrhea which did not stop after four to five days. He felt annoying Hot in the Upper Jiao, closed eyes and had asthma, had cloudy mind. When I saw him, I thought that, the condition was indeed very dangerous, but the pulse was still with root, so it was known that there was chance to save him. He was given the Ziyin Qingjie Tang, which was cooked for one big tea cup. For the child was very young, he was given to drink slowly. The condition was much improved. Due to long time loss of the Yin portion of the body, he had remaining asthenic Fire. In the following herbal formula, herb Shanyao 30 gram, Xuanshen 30 gram was used. Tow doses solved the asthenic Fire. Usually, when doctor meet such condition, to clear the Dryness-Hotness, the slippery diarrhea would be worse; to nourish the slippery diarrhea, the Dryness-Hotness would be worse. Only with this formula here, Shanyao can stop the slippery diarrhea, and can also nourish the Yin and to clear the Hot; The Huashi can clear the Dryness-Hotness, to promote smooth urine and to stop diarrhea. The combination of these two can help each other in such condition. The Shaoyao can nourish the Yin blood, to promote urine. The Gancao is to harmony the Yin and Yang, to harmony the Middle Part of the body. It is also a main ingredient to clear fire and to stop diarrhea. All come together, makes the formula work very well. I have used this formula saved a lot of patients, even if their condition was very dangerous.

Mr. Liu, in Fengtian city, was 25 or 26 years of old. He got Shanghan disease in a winter. After treatment, he had endless slippery diarrhea. He felt annoying and agitating hot in the Upper Jiao, had cloudy mind, random chattering from time to time. His pulse was waving and frequent, but not strong when pressed hard. In the formula give to him, wee Shanyao 45 gram, Huashi 30 gram, Baishao 18 gram, and Gancao 9 gram. One dose solved the diarrhea. His Upper Jiao hotness, and random chattering remained. So, Xuanshen and Shashen were used to clear the Hotness. Then the diarrhea recurred. Use the previous formula again, the diarrhea stopped again, but the Hotness became worse and the mind was much more cloudy and loss consciousness. At the time, the whole family came together, all of which believed there was no way to help. When I felt his pulse, his pulse was though not sthenic, but still with root. The pulse was though frequent, but not exceeded six times per breath circle. So, I predicted that his condition might have chance to save. I told the family: “if you believe the herbs might work, there would have chance to save.” The family seems understand some. The herbs used was the Baihu Jia Renshen Tang, with Shanyao 30 gram to replace Genmi, Shengdi 30 gram to replace Zhimu. The herbal tea was asked to drink with warm, one mouth once. It was requested to finish the drink within six hours. After finish the drink, the condition was solved.

A child, with family name of Qian, was 4 years of old. He had burning hot and slippery diarrhea. He was saved by use of Ziyin Qingzao Tang.

Letter from Mr. Yang, Tieling city, Fengtian province:

I treated a patient, Mrs. Li, with bloating condition. She had been treated by other doctors by using Cangzhu, Binglang, Houpo, Zhishi, Xiangfu and Zikou, etc, such spicy-dryness-break herbs. In  the beginning, it worked somehow. After seven to eight doses, the condition became worse. The lady felt annoying and agitating thirst, and slippery diarrhea. She was changed to other doctor. She was given the Zipu Hubo Wan. The annoying thirsty was worse and the diarrhea was 15 to 16 times a day. Upon the send visit, that doctor also refused to treat her any longer. The family tried further more doctors, none accept the invitation to treat her. She later became almost to die. She was left on the bed to wait to die. Her relatives knew me and pushed me to have a look. Her pulse was as floating grass over the water, hard to count. It could not be felt when pressed harder, but seems there was root on the two Chi positions. Her speak was not clear, but still could identify the talk. She said she felt very thirsty in the heart, but little bit drink could make her very much pain. She did not eat anything for three days. She was given Ziyin Qingzao Tang. For her pulse was very weak, and there was a tendency to escape, added wild Taishen and Shanyurou. One dose solved the condition and she could eat. Then, she was given the single Shanyao formula, with herb Jineijin powder and western medicine Baibushen (?), for its advantage as both medication and food. Together with the previous formula with some modification, one day one dose to drink. After ten days, the condition was completely cured.

9. Ziyin Guxia Tang (Ziyin means to nourish the Yin, in Chinese; Guxia means to hold or to fix, or to seal the Lower Jiao of the body).

If the person drunk the previous herbs, the invading Xie Fire has been cleared, but the person still feels thirsty and remains some diarrhea. Or, due to take of breaking herbs so as damaged the Qi portion of the body, the person has endless slippery diarrhea. Or, the person has asthma, or has cough, or has sweat, or has palpitation, all need to drink this formula.

Shanyao 45 gram, Shoudi 45 gram, wild Taishen 24 gram, Huashi 15 gram, Baishao 15 gram, Gancao 6 gram, sour Shiliu (pomegranate) one (break with the peel).

Cook the sour Shiliu first for ten boiling, remove the residue, add the remaining herbal ingredients in and continue the cook. The collected herbal tea was separated into two parts. Drink the tea two times. If there was no sour Shiliu, use Muli 30 gram. If the sweat is heavy, add Shanyurou (remove kernel), 18 gram.

In the treatment of the Shanghan and Wen disease, it is forbidden to use Qi-breaking herbs. If there is pain in the upper or side of abdomen, add Ruxiang, Moyao, Chuanlianzi, or Danshen in the formula. If there is pain in the abdomen, add Shaoyao. All can stop the pain. If due to the Xie Qi in the body surface not expelled, which fold the body to cause stagnated Fire to cause the pain, surface-expelling and Fire-clearing therapy will solve the pain naturally. If the Binglang, Qingpi, and Yujin were mis-used, so as to damage the Big Qi in the Chest, the Wind-Cold will invade the body to cause Jie Xiong condition. Even if the Xie Qi has penetrated deep into the Yangming or Taiyin stage, but the condition is not sthenic yet, the use of Qi-breaking herbs and the Cold herbs together would cause slippery diarrhea and much more problems. I have seen such wrong conditions many times and feel very sorry for the current healthcare society. So, if the Qi-breaking herbs cause the Jiexiong condition, I set up the Dang Xiong Tang to save the mistake; if it causes slippery diarrhea, use the formula here, the Ziyin Guxia Tang to solve the mistake (diarrhea). However, if the mistake is not so severe, it is possible to correct it, but if it is too big mistake, and the person is really in dangerous condition, it would hard to correct it.

10 Youlong Tang

This formula is used for person, who has accumulated Fire in the chest before, but now attacked by out-coming Xie Qi. The inside Fire was sealed or folded by the invading Xie Qi, cannot be released. The person feels annoyed and agitated from time to time, he may have asthma, or chest pain and his pulse is waving and slippery and long.

Lianqiao 30 gram, Shigao 18 gram (grind), Chantui 6 gram (remove feet and soil), Niubangzi 6 gram (fry and grind).

For asthma, double the amount of Niubangzi; for chest pain, add Danshen 9 gram, and Moyao 9 gram, for pain in the side of abdomen, add Chaihu 9 gram, and Chuanlianzi 9 gram.

The disease condition suits for this formula is the same as the Da Qinglong Tang condition in the book
Shang Han Lun. However, the Da Qinglong Tang is used for Shanghan disease, and the Youlong Tang here is used for Wen disease. For Shanghan disease, if the annoying and agitating feeling is too strong in the chest, this formula can also be used, so it is called Youlong Tang (You here means “similar as”; the Long means the Da Qinglong Tang.)

A man, 70 years of old, has a long history of chronic disease. In a winter, due to attack by Shanghan disease, his chronic disease recurred. He has asthma and cough. Within two to three days, he had a lot of phlegm, and felt very annoying Hot in the Upper Jiao. His pulse was floating and frequent. He was treated with the Youlong Tang, with addition of Xuanshen 12 gram, and Dangshen 12 gram. One dose created sweat to him and his condition was solved.

My student, Mr. Liu, treated a man, 40 years of old. Due to invading Xie Qi, he had asthma and lots of phlegm. Within four to five days, his pulse was waving and slippery, and his tongue covering was white and slight yellow in color. Mr. Liu gave him the Youlong Tang, with Shigao 30 gram, Lianqiao 9 gram. One dose created sweat in the body and the invading hotness reduced, bu the asthma was not completely solved. His pulse then was calm as normal, with slight weak. So he used Conglong Tang, with removal of Souzi, but with addition of Dangshen 9 gram. After drink of the herbal tea, the asthma stopped.

When I heard this news, I was happy:  the asthma due to Xie Qi invasion is mostly treated with Xiao Qinglong Tang. My Youlong Tang is originally to replace the Da Qinglong Tang, now it can also replace the Xiao Qinglong Tang. This is beyond my expect. With modification of the amount of herbal ingredients, it worked so fantastic. Apparently, the merit of an herbal formula depends on the people who use it and how to use it. Smart people know how to adjust it in actual clinic situation.

Comments: the herb Lianqiao is originally not a sweat-creating herb. In the various herbal books, there is no any indication that it can create sweat. Only if the person has inside hot, and if it is used up to 30 gram, the person will have sweat. Its sweating power is long and calm. For its calm sweating, not to be as a big ocean of sweat; for its long effect, drink it before go to bed, the person can have mild sweat all over the night to loss muscle. It can also work to release the Liver stagnated Qi, to reduce the sthenic Lung Qi. If only know that it is a main herb for cure of skin rash and ulcer, it means you do not understand it yet. When use the Lianqiao for sweat, it must be the green-blue one. The young lianqiao is green and the old one is yellow. When a plant is in young, it bears growing power. So the Lianqiao for sweat, must be the green one.
