Acupuncture needle twisting

Twisting the acupuncture needle is one of the most important ways for treatment. The twisting can cause either supplying or depleting effects to the body function. For example for patient with low blood pressure, the acupuncture point Quchi on the right side of arm is commonly used with supplying technique. To create the supplying effect on this point, the acupuncture needle on the right arm should be twisted clockwise while the one on the left arm should be twist counter-clockwise. If the patient has high blood pressure, then the twisting direction on this points should be opposite. You see, the direction of needle twisting is important depending on the left or right side of the acupuncture point. Also due to the fact that the direction of life energy moving in the arm and leg is different, the direction of needle twisting is also variable.

Here is some rule suggested and practiced by Dr. Wang Leting (China).

You need to remember: to create a supplying effect, the needle in the three Yang meridians in the right arm should be twisted clockwise (e.g. your right thumb moves front and your right point finger moves backwards- towards your body direction). Then to create the supplying effect, the needles in the three Yin meridians in the right arms should be twisted counter clockwise. Now, for acupuncture point in the three Yang meridians in the left arm should be twisted counter clockwise but the needles in the three Yin meridians in the left arm should be twisted clockwise. The needle direction in the three Yin meridians in the right leg should be the same as it is in the three Yang meridians in the right arm. The direction of the needle twisting in the three Yang meridians should follow the three Yin meridians in arm of the same side of the body.

If we want to create a depleting effect, all of the directions introduced above should be opposite.

Most acupuncturists, especially the newly graduated ones, tend to use half-supplying and half-depleting technique to manipulate their needle. In most case, it also works. However, if you know the correct way to handle the needles to supply pure either supplying or depleting effects, plus the variation in the strength of the twisting of the needles,  the healing effect will be much better.
